This International Women’s Day, we’re shining a spotlight on some of the remarkable individuals who contribute to our organization. Meet Sherry Smith, Program Manager of African Nova Scotian Retrofit program.

What is one piece of advice you would give your younger self?

You don’t need to have everything figured out. Trust your journey, stay curious, take risks and walk boldly-every step is preparing you for the rooms you’ll one day lead.

What’s a moment in your career that made you feel truly proud?

A proud moment was stepping into a role that directly serves African Nova Scotian communities, helping families access programs for safer, healthier, energy-efficient homes. It confirmed my purpose: to give back, advocate and support my community’s growth.

Who has inspired you and why?

I’m inspired by the Black women who carried strength with grace while navigating systems not built for them. Their resilience taught me that leadership is about impact and uplifting others-not titles.

What’s one challenge you’ve faced, and how did it shape you?

Like many BIPOC women, I’ve been underestimated and overlooked. Instead of breaking me, those moments strengthened me. They taught me to advocate for myself, trust my expertise and create space for others.

What advice would you give to the next generation of people in your industry?

To the next generation of BIPOC women in the energy sector:

• You don’t need to know everything to begin-just be willing to learn.

• Find mentors and allies who will challenge and support you.

• Your lived experience is an asset-communities need your voice.

• Take up space confidently; you belong in every room where decisions are made. There is space for you here. Step in boldly and bring others with you.
